Winter Reads

In my most recent blog post, I said I would post in early December with my winter reading list.  Clearly that didn’t happen, because, well…December!  It’s busy!  Even during a pandemic!  I sincerely hope that all of you are enjoying a restful, happy, and healthy holiday season.

For those who were wondering (perhaps one or two of you), YES, I am still here!  It was a rough summer and early fall for a variety of reasons, and my motivation was in the toilet.  I’m not sure why I seem to be coming around in November of all months, but here we are.  I’m more in the Christmas spirit than I have been for a long time, AND my darling daughter, Allison, who has been in Australia for the last 20 months, is coming home for Christmas with her wonderful boyfriend, Tom!  SQUEEEEE!!

When in Doubt…Add Lots of Links!

I admit I have been procrastinating writing this blog post.  June has been a terrible, painful, heart-breaking month in Canada, with the discovery of the remains of over 1000 Indigenous children on several former residential school sites.  It is expected that many more will be found.  I’m sure that readers have likely already heard and read A LOT about this news, and in coming here, may be looking for more of an escape.  In the end, though, it didn’t feel right to simply ignore what has happened this month and post my usual (mostly) upbeat book reviews and book-ish news.

It’s the Victoria Day long weekend in Canada, affectionately known as May 2-4, a nod to both Queen Victoria’s birthday, and a case of twenty-four beers (known as a two-four). One would think beer would be Canada’s national drink, but one would be wrong. It is the Bloody Caesar! All hail!

Welcome, May!

May blew into Southwestern Ontario this morning with a strong wind and beautiful sunshine, although I know it snowed overnight in some parts of the province.  You all have my sympathies!  I shouldn’t be surprised, and to be honest, I’m not.  It’s not unheard of for us to have snow on the Victoria Day (May 24) long weekend here.  Still, there’s lots of colour in the neighbourhood today, with daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and flowering trees in every shade of pink; and our lilac trees have sprouted tiny buds.

Book Review and Other News

It’s the third week in April, 2021.  We’re in week two of a six-week lockdown in Ontario, hoping to get a handle on the rapidly increasing numbers in our province.  All I can say is, thank goodness for books and Netflix!

Everyone Starts Somewhere…

There is a wide smile on my face as I begin to type this: my first ever blog post. I have a beautiful writing area, mine alone, set up in a corner of our den. My white desk sits beside one of the many windows in our house. Although it is a dull, early March day as I type this, the open blinds let in some much-needed light. I have lit a French lavender candle in a green glass jar, a Christmas gift from my stepdaughter.
